How to Build a Shower Niche in a Brick or External Wall

You can build a shower niche in a brick or external wall, but not by cutting a deep hole into the masonry. In a stud wall the niche sits in the void between the timbers. In a solid brick or external wall there is no void, so the correct method is to batten a shallow framework off the face of the wall, insulate behind it and form the niche within that build-out. That keeps the recess out of the cold, damp brickwork, protects the structure and gives you a box you can actually waterproof. This is the standard problem in the older SE London housing stock, and it has a standard solution.

Why can’t you just cut a niche into a brick wall?

Two reasons, and both matter. The first is structural. An external brick wall is doing a job: it holds the house up and keeps the weather out. Chopping a 100mm-deep recess into a single-leaf external wall removes material the wall needs, and in an older solid-brick property with no cavity you can be cutting most of the way through the fabric of the house. That is not a tiling decision, it is a structural one, and the answer is almost always no.

The second is damp and cold. Even where the wall could physically take a recess, the back of that niche now sits against cold, often slightly damp masonry. Warm, wet shower air hits a cold surface and condenses. Because it is trapped behind tile, it cannot dry out, so you get black mould in the corners, staining through the grout and eventually damp tracking into the room. A niche cut into a cold external wall is a condensation trap by design.

How do you build a niche into a solid or external wall properly?

You bring the niche forward off the wall rather than pushing it back into the wall. The sequence looks like this.

First, a framework is battened off the face of the brick, treated timber or metal furring set out to create a shallow service void across the shower wall. This is the same principle as dry-lining, and it gives you a plane in front of the cold masonry to work from.

Second, insulation is packed into that void behind where the niche will sit. This is the step that separates a dry niche from a damp one. Insulation board keeps the tiled surface warm enough that shower air does not condense on it, and it isolates the recess from the cold brick behind. On an external wall this is not optional.

Third, the niche is formed within the build-out using a waterproof backer board such as a foam tile-backer, framed to the size you want. Because the niche now lives in the new structure rather than the brick, you control its depth, and you get clean, square, boardable faces to tank.

Fourth, the whole recess is waterproofed continuously with the shower walls. The method is exactly the same as any wet area: a liquid membrane like Mapei Mapelastic or a bonded sheet like Schluter Kerdi, with every internal corner reinforced with tape. Get the tanking right and the built-out niche is every bit as reliable as one in a stud wall.

How much room does the build-out take?

This is the honest trade-off. A usable niche needs around 80 to 100mm of internal depth to hold shampoo and shower bottles standing up. Add the framework, the insulation and the boarding, and the finished shower wall typically comes forward by around 100 to 150mm across the area of the build-out. In a compact bathroom that is real space, and it is worth planning for at design stage rather than discovering it halfway through.

Most people accept the small loss of width happily once they understand the alternative is either no niche or a damp problem. If space is genuinely tight, the answer is usually to build out only the section of wall that carries the niche, or to reconsider placement, which I cover in the niche height and placement guide.

Does this apply to older houses around Bromley and Beckenham?

Very much so. A large share of the housing across Bromley, Beckenham, Orpington and the surrounding areas is late-Victorian and Edwardian, built with solid brick external walls and no cavity. That means two things for a shower niche: there is no stud void to build into on an external wall, and the masonry is cold and sometimes carries a bit of damp. Both point straight to the build-out and insulate method rather than cutting into the brick.
