Kitchen Splashback Height, Layout and Fitting: A Tiler Guide to Getting It Right
How high a kitchen splashback should be, where the tiled run starts and stops, the worktop junction, socket cut-outs and setting out, from a master tiler in Bromley.
In a kitchen with wall units, the splashback normally fills the entire gap between the worktop and the underside of those units, which in most UK kitchens is between 450mm and 600mm. On a run with no units above, around 600mm above the worktop is the usual height, and behind the hob the tiling goes higher still, up to the extractor. The height is the easy part. What decides whether a splashback looks right is the setting out, the worktop junction and where the run starts and stops.

How high should a kitchen splashback be?
Standard UK kitchen geometry does most of the deciding for you. Base units plus worktop put the working surface at roughly 900mm from the floor, and wall units are usually hung with their underside between 1350mm and 1500mm. Subtract one from the other and you get the gap the splashback fills, generally 450mm to 600mm. You tile the lot. Leaving a painted strip above the tiles looks unfinished and gets grubby fast.
Where there are no wall units, you are choosing a line rather than filling a gap. Around 600mm above the worktop clears the splash zone comfortably, but a line floating in the middle of a wall needs a reason to be there. The best open runs stop at something: the underside of a window sill, the top of a reveal, a shelf line, or the ceiling. Aligning with an existing horizontal is what makes it read as designed rather than arbitrary.
Where should the tiled run start and stop?
Left to right, the same principle applies: end the run on a feature, not in mid air. Good stopping points are the end of a worktop, the edge of a tall unit, a return into a corner, or a window reveal. A splashback that dies halfway along a blank wall always looks like the tiles ran out.

How high do you tile behind the hob?
Higher than the rest, and for good reason. That wall takes fat, steam and splatter the rest of the kitchen never sees, so the tiling should run right up to the underside of the extractor hood rather than stopping at the general splashback line. Where there is no hood, take that section to the wall unit above or to the ceiling.
The clearance between hob and extractor is set by the appliance manufacturers and it varies, so check both sets of instructions before anybody commits to a tile line. How do you finish the joint where tiles meet the worktop?
With silicone, never with grout. This is the single most common failure I get called to look at in kitchens.
The wall and the worktop are two independent structures. A timber worktop swells and shrinks with moisture, a laminate one moves with heat, and the wall does its own thing. Grout is rigid and has no tolerance for that, so a grouted worktop junction cracks, and once it cracks water gets behind the tiles and into the worktop edge.
The correct detail is a small, consistent gap at the bottom course, kept clean of adhesive, then filled with a good quality colour-matched silicone. Against natural stone or quartz, use a neutral cure silicone: acetic cure products can stain a stone edge permanently. Internal corners where two tiled walls meet get the same treatment.
How do you set out the splashback so the cuts do not land badly?
This is what separates a splashback that looks considered from one fitted in a hurry. It is a short run at eye level, so every cut is on display.
Start with a datum. Worktops are rarely dead level along their length, so I find the high point and work to a levelled line rather than following the worktop blindly. Get that wrong and the top course tapers into the wall units, which you cannot hide.
Then decide where the layout is centred. The hob is usually the strongest sightline in a kitchen, so centring the pattern on the hob or on the window above the sink beats starting from a corner and letting the cuts fall where they may. Dry lay the run and see what lands at each end. If you are left with a sliver, shift the layout by half a tile so both ends carry a decent, even cut.
Watch the vertical too. On a 450mm gap in brick bond metro, a badly chosen starting course leaves a thin sliver under the wall units where the light catches it all day. What about sockets, switches and cut-outs?
Sockets sit in the middle of the visible run, so they get planned into the setting out, not discovered later. Faceplates only cover a few millimetres around the opening, so a rough or oversized cut shows permanently.
Mark the box positions onto dry-laid tiles, cut with a diamond hole saw or a grinder rather than nibbling with pliers, and where the layout allows, nudge it so a socket sits well inside a tile face rather than straddling a joint by a whisker. The circuit is isolated first and an electrician does the final fix once the tiles and grout are done. A splashback is a small area of tiling that gets looked at more than almost any other surface in the house. Height follows the units, the run stops on a feature, the hob zone goes higher, the worktop junction is siliconed, and the setting out is decided before a single tile is fixed.
