What This Covers
- Restoring original Victorian and Edwardian geometric floors and paths
- Sympathetic replacement where original tiles are beyond saving
- New encaustic and geometric floors laid in period style
- Matching historic patterns, borders and colours
- Careful setting out from datum lines for true, balanced patterns
How I Work
Period geometric floors were laid by craftsmen and they deserve the same care in restoration. I assess what can be saved, what needs replacing, and how to blend new work into old so the repair is not obvious.
These patterns are unforgiving. A geometric floor that starts even slightly off-square amplifies the error across every row. I set out from precise datum lines and dry-lay the full pattern before any adhesive, exactly as this work demands.
Matching matters as much as laying. I source encaustic and geometric tiles that suit the original palette and format as closely as available, so a restored section sits naturally within the historic floor.
What Affects the Cost of Victorian Floor Restoration?
Every job is different. These are the main factors that affect the price. I explain all of them during the quote visit so there are no surprises.
- Pattern complexity: multi-colour geometric and encaustic patterns are the most involved
- Restore versus replace: matching and blending into an original floor is painstaking work
- Area size: hallways, paths and larger floors need extensive dry-laying and planning
- Tile matching: sourcing tiles to suit a historic palette and format takes time
- Wastage: angled and cut pieces mean higher wastage than a straight-set floor
Straight from the Tiler
44 years of craft, City & Guilds qualified. Every job done to the same standard.
"Had the bathroom completely retiled after years of putting it off. Darren was professional from the first visit right through to the final cleanup. Arrived on time every day, protected everything and left the place spotless. The tiling is flawless. Wish we had done it sooner."
"Wet room in our main bathroom. Darren was recommended by our builder and it is easy to see why. He walked us through exactly what the job involved before he started, the tanking was done meticulously and the marble tiles are set out perfectly. The result is better than we imagined. Very fair price for the standard of work."
"We had Calacatta marble laid throughout the master bathroom and en suite. Darren was the only tiler we spoke to who properly understood the material, specifically around pre sealing, the correct adhesive and where the movement joints needed to go. Some of the others we consulted either did not know or glossed over it entirely. The result is exceptional and has held up perfectly. Would not hesitate to recommend him."
