Restoring an original Victorian or geometric floor is a repair job, not a tiling job. The order of work is what makes or breaks it: assess and salvage what is there, deal with whatever is under it (usually a lime bed, a bitumen residue, or both), source replacements that match the original module, and only then relay to the pattern. Skip the substrate stage and you get a beautiful floor in a Bromley terrace or a Beckenham semi that lifts within two winters.

What does Victorian floor tile restoration actually involve?
The tiles are rarely the problem. Unglazed geometric and encaustic bodies are durable, which is why hundred year old floors are still in service across Bromley, Beckenham and Crystal Palace. What fails is everything around them: the bedding mortar softens, the base settles, damp works up through a floor that never had a membrane, and somebody puts a radiator pipe or a stud wall through it.
So the survey comes first. I tap the whole floor to map what is loose or hollow, look for a dip that says the base has moved, read the border and corner blocks for the original pattern, and lift one sacrificial tile. That tile tells you most of what the job will be.

Can original Victorian floor tiles be lifted and salvaged?
Some of them, and you need to know that before you start. Two things decide the salvage rate.
The first is the bedding. Victorian floors were commonly set into lime mortar over hardcore, brick or a lime concrete oversite, and lime is soft enough to release a tile with patience. Where a floor was relaid in sand and cement, the bond is harder than the tile and the tile loses.
The second is the shape. Big square field tiles come up best. The small triangles, thin border strips and corner blocks snap, and they are also the hardest to replace, because they define the pattern.
The method matters. Work from an existing gap outward, never into the middle of an intact field. Damp the bed to soften old lime mortar rather than attacking it dry. Use a thin lifting chisel under the tile body, not a bolster at the joint, so the load comes off from beneath. Salvaged tiles then get the old mortar cleaned off the back, and no acid: strong acid cleaners attack the lime and cement bedding mortar left on the back, etch the softer cement-bodied tiles, and dull the surface of many unglazed geometrics.
What is under an old floor, and why does the bitumen matter so much?
This is the stage that surprises people. Across South East London, a great many hall and path floors were covered over between the 1950s and the 1980s when lino, vinyl or wood block went down, often stuck with hot black bitumen. Strip the vinyl off today and the floor is still there under a skin of tar.
Bitumen is a real problem for a modern build up. It is oily, flexible and thermoplastic, so cement-based adhesive will not bond to it dependably, and it softens with heat, which rules out untreated underfloor heating. Three honest options: mechanical removal back to a sound base, isolation with a two part epoxy damp proof membrane specified for use over bitumen (Ardex DPM 1 C R is the one I reach for), or overboarding where height allows, with the board mechanically fixed through to a sound base and a decoupling mat such as Schluter Ditra above it. Note the fixings: bond a decoupling mat onto bitumen and you hit the same failure. What you must not do is skim a self-levelling compound straight over it and hope.
The other thing under a Victorian floor is usually nothing: no damp proof membrane, no insulation, sometimes just hardcore or bare earth. That is not automatically a fault: the original floor was designed to let ground moisture pass through, and that is why the finished floor gets a breathable sealer, never a plastic coating. How do you source replacement tiles that actually fit?
Colour is the easy half. Module is the hard half.
Original Victorian geometrics were made to imperial sizes, and the whole pattern is a repeating module of squares, triangles and border strips derived from it. A modern metric reproduction can be a lovely tile, an accurate colour, and still sit a few millimetres out of that module, so the pattern drifts, and that drift accumulates across a hallway until it is instantly visible.
Measure the original module and thickness precisely, then source to it. Reclamation yards are first: genuine period stock matches by definition. Heritage makers including Original Style, Craven Dunnill Jackfield and Winckelmans produce geometric ranges that work on plenty of floors. Winckelmans works to metric modules (100x100, 50x50, 20x20), so it suits a full new floor better than a few pieces dropped into an imperial field. Check module and thickness before ordering, whoever supplies it.
Then there is patina. A century of feet has softened the originals, and a new replacement sits brighter beside them. The fix is placement: salvaged originals go in the eye-line as you come through the door, new pieces into the quieter zones. How do you relay to the original pattern?
From the border inward, and from a datum you choose deliberately.
A Victorian geometric floor is not a field of tiles with a decorative edge added. It is a border and corner blocks that square the space, with the patterned field running to meet them. Period hallways are almost never square, so the border absorbs the discrepancy and the field stays true. Set out from the sight-line that matters, usually the front door threshold looking down the hall, never from a wall you assume is straight. Same discipline as the complex setting out page.
Two details give away a bad restoration: joint width and grout colour. Original geometrics were laid tight, effectively butt-jointed, so a modern 3mm joint grid reads as wrong immediately. Keep the joint fine and the grout close to the tile body colour.
Then seal it properly. A breathable impregnating sealer keeps stains out and lets the floor release moisture: LTP Mattstone or Lithofin MN Stain-Stop. A topical varnish looks glossy for a year, traps damp under it, and blows tiles off a floor with no membrane.
