What This Covers
- Porcelain patio tiling on concrete substrates
- Pool surrounds with anti-slip rated porcelain
- Front paths and porches — period restoration and modern
- Step and threshold tiling at external doors
- Frost-proof specification for UK freeze-thaw conditions
How I Work
Every outdoor tile must be frost-proof rated with water absorption below 0.1%. I verify this on the product datasheet before accepting the tile for external use. Standard indoor porcelain can crack in a UK winter.
Full-bed adhesive application with back-buttering on every tile. Voids behind outdoor tiles trap water that freezes and cracks the tile. 95%+ coverage is the specification.
Expansion joints at every 3-4 metres, at every perimeter, and at every fixed element. The temperature range outdoors in the UK is far greater than indoors and the tile bed needs room to move.
What Affects the Cost of Outdoor & Patio Tiling in Bromley?
Every job is different. These are the main factors that affect the price — I explain all of them during the quote visit.
- Area size — larger patios and pool surrounds take proportionally more time
- Substrate condition — existing concrete may need repair, levelling, or DPM application
- Tile format — 20mm outdoor porcelain costs more per sqm than indoor tiles
- Drainage work — falls may need adjusting if the existing slab does not drain correctly
- Access — garden access for materials and equipment affects project logistics
- Expansion joints — more joints needed outdoors than indoors due to temperature range
Straight from the Tiler
44 years of craft, City & Guilds qualified. Every job done to the same standard.
"Had the bathroom completely retiled after years of putting it off. Darren was professional from the first visit right through to the final cleanup. Arrived on time every day, protected everything and left the place spotless. The tiling is flawless. Wish we had done it sooner."
"Wet room in our main bathroom. Darren was recommended by our builder and it is easy to see why. He walked us through exactly what the job involved before he started, the tanking was done meticulously and the marble tiles are set out perfectly. The result is better than we imagined. Very fair price for the standard of work."
"We had Calacatta marble laid throughout the master bathroom and en suite. Darren was the only tiler we spoke to who properly understood the material, specifically around pre sealing, the correct adhesive and where the movement joints needed to go. Some of the others we consulted either did not know or glossed over it entirely. The result is exceptional and has held up perfectly. Would not hesitate to recommend him."
